There is no denying that the Tamiya Blackfoot has a special place in my heart. While it wasn’t the first RC kit I built from scratch, it was the first hobby grade RC truck I ever owned. Unfortunately that Tamiya Blackfoot has been lost to time, but since the Blackfoot has been re-released and re-designed by Tamiya multiple times, you can still buy one brand new kit form today. Granted, the pictures you see here, a build of the Tamiya Blackfoot Xtreme, isn’t quite like the original, but thanks to its body, wheels and tires, it still holds much of that charm that made the original Blackfoot so popular. Follow along as we document the building of our very own Tamiya Blackfoot Xtreme and take it out for a good bashing.
Tamiya obviously had the novice hobbyist in mind when they released the Blackfoot Xtreme. Unlike most RC truck kits you’ll ever build, this one comes with the differential and transmission pre-built. While that might be a bit of a disappointment for those of us who love building kits, it removes that transmission building intimidation factor most newbies usually feel. The Blackfoot Xtreme was by far the easiest RC truck kit we’ve ever built. Below is a photo of the pre-built transmission with the suspension arms attached.
And that’s it! The Blackfoot is built and ready to rumble. Running it with the stock 540 motor and a nimh battery pack proved that it was more than quick enough to keep a newbie happy, while the looks and styling bring back memories to every long time RC enthusiast.
